Surfing
Catch your first wave on the East Coast
- Start on a soft-top longboard (8–9ft) — stable, forgiving, and easy to catch waves on
- Head to the East Coast (Fujairah, Dibba) — the only place in the UAE with surfable waves
- Best season: October to April when Indian Ocean swells arrive
- Book a 2-hour beginner group lesson — instructors will be in the water with you
- Don't worry about getting tumbled — the UAE's small waves are very forgiving
Kitesurfing
Harness the wind across the Arabian Gulf
- A 12-hour IKO certified course is mandatory before riding independently — there are no shortcuts
- Learn between October and April when winds are more consistent and manageable for beginners
- Umm Al Quwain's shallow lagoon is the best beginner learning environment in the UAE
- Expect to spend another 20–40 hours of practice before feeling genuinely comfortable
- Never kite alone — always ride with others and use a safety leash
Windsurfing
Glide on warm, flat Arabian Gulf water
- Start on a large, stable beginner board (200L+) with a small sail in light wind
- Abu Dhabi and Umm Al Quwain's flat, sheltered water are ideal for first timers
- Windsurfing is gentler than kitesurfing — falling in is easier to recover from
- A 2-day beginner course gets you tacking and jibing independently
- Year-round activity in the UAE — winter is cooler but conditions are often more consistent
Scuba Diving
Explore UAE reefs and Musandam's fjords
- Try a 'Discover Scuba' introductory session first — no certification needed, takes just half a day
- Fujairah and Dibba have some of the best reef diving in the Arabian region
- A PADI Open Water course takes 3–4 days and qualifies you to dive to 18m worldwide
- October to May is peak dive season — visibility is best and water temperature is comfortable
- A day trip to Musandam (Oman) is possible from UAE — no visa required for most nationalities
Wing Foiling
Fly above the water on a hydrofoil wing
- Start with a large volume board (100L+) and a medium wing (5–6m) in light winds of 12–18kt
- The UAE's flat Gulf water is ideal for learning — no waves required
- Expect a steep learning curve in your first session; most people achieve first flight within 2–3 days
- Al Hamra (RAK), Dubai Kite Beach, and Abu Dhabi's Al Bateen are the top UAE learning spots
- Book a structured lesson — self-teaching on a hydrofoil is unsafe and risks costly equipment damage
SUP
Explore UAE coastlines by stand-up paddleboard
- Rent before buying — most UAE beaches and hotels rent SUPs for AED 100–200/hour
- Start on flat, calm water (Dubai Marina, Abu Dhabi Corniche) before trying open sea
- Begin kneeling before standing up — it's easier than it looks on calm water
- An inflatable iSUP is ideal for the UAE: lightweight, easy to transport, and stable in flat conditions
- Go out early (before 9am) for the calmest water and the most pleasant temperatures year-round
Freediving
Explore the underwater world on a single breath
- No prior diving experience needed for an intro session — just the ability to swim confidently
- Musandam and Fujairah offer stunning shallow reefs perfect for beginning freedivers
- AIDA 1 Star certification takes 2 days and qualifies you to dive to 10m
- Safety is paramount — always freedive with a buddy and never hyperventilate before a dive
- October to May is the best season — clearest visibility and comfortable 25–29°C water
Sailing
Harness the winter trade winds across the Gulf
- Start with a dinghy — smaller, more responsive, and the best way to truly feel the wind
- Dubai Offshore Sailing Club and Abu Dhabi Sailing & Yacht Club both offer RYA beginner courses
- October to April is the prime sailing season — consistent NE trades of 10–18kt
- RYA Dinghy Level 1+2 takes 4 days and qualifies you to sail independently
- Join a club — sailing is social and crew positions let you practice without owning a boat
Kayaking
Paddle ancient mangroves and dramatic fjords
- No experience needed — guided tours include all equipment and brief paddling instruction
- Khor Kalba mangroves in Sharjah are the most beginner-friendly venue: calm, sheltered, and wildlife-rich
- Sit-on-top kayaks are the easiest to get into and hardest to capsize
- October to April is ideal — comfortable temperatures and the most active mangrove wildlife
- Musandam sea kayaking is the ultimate UAE paddle experience — arrange a multi-day guided trip
Snorkeling
Explore UAE reefs and marine life from the surface
- Rent a mask, snorkel, and fins from any East Coast beach resort — no booking required
- Khor Fakkan bay and Sandy Beach Hotel (Fujairah) have excellent shallow reef snorkeling from shore
- A properly fitting mask is the most important thing — no leaks, no fogging
- Spit or use anti-fog spray on the lens before every dive
- Guided snorkeling boat trips from Dibba reach sites unreachable from shore — including turtle bays
Jet Skiing
Blast across the Gulf — no licence, just throttle
- No licence is required in the UAE — just show up at any jet ski rental operator
- Kite Beach and Dubai Marina have the most operators; Fujairah is quieter and cheaper
- Most UAE operators require a safety briefing and a copy of your ID
- Always wear the kill switch lanyard — it stops the engine if you fall off
- Book early morning in summer (6–8am) before the heat becomes intense
Wakeboarding
Cable parks and boat tow — UAE's urban board sport
- Start at a cable park — no boat needed, consistent pull speed, and instructors on hand
- Wadi Adventure (Al Ain) and various Dubai cable parks are the main UAE venues
- Lean back and let the cable pull you up — don't try to stand by muscling the handle
- Helmet and impact vest are mandatory at all UAE cable parks — provided by the park
- Progress from beginner cable (straight pull) to corners and ramps as your skills improve
