Surfing
Catch your first wave on the East Coast
- Start on a soft-top longboard (8–9ft) — stable, forgiving, and easy to catch waves on
- Head to the East Coast (Fujairah, Dibba) — the only place in the UAE with surfable waves
- Best season: October to April when Indian Ocean swells arrive
- Book a 2-hour beginner group lesson — instructors will be in the water with you
- Don't worry about getting tumbled — the UAE's small waves are very forgiving
Kitesurfing
Harness the wind across the Arabian Gulf
- A 12-hour IKO certified course is mandatory before riding independently — there are no shortcuts
- Learn between October and April when winds are more consistent and manageable for beginners
- Umm Al Quwain's shallow lagoon is the best beginner learning environment in the UAE
- Expect to spend another 20–40 hours of practice before feeling genuinely comfortable
- Never kite alone — always ride with others and use a safety leash
Windsurfing
Glide on warm, flat Arabian Gulf water
- Start on a large, stable beginner board (200L+) with a small sail in light wind
- Abu Dhabi and Umm Al Quwain's flat, sheltered water are ideal for first timers
- Windsurfing is gentler than kitesurfing — falling in is easier to recover from
- A 2-day beginner course gets you tacking and jibing independently
- Year-round activity in the UAE — winter is cooler but conditions are often more consistent
Scuba Diving
Explore UAE reefs and Musandam's fjords
- Try a 'Discover Scuba' introductory session first — no certification needed, takes just half a day
- Fujairah and Dibba have some of the best reef diving in the Arabian region
- A PADI Open Water course takes 3–4 days and qualifies you to dive to 18m worldwide
- October to May is peak dive season — visibility is best and water temperature is comfortable
- A day trip to Musandam (Oman) is possible from UAE — no visa required for most nationalities
Wing Foiling
Fly above the water on a hydrofoil wing
- Start with a large volume board (100L+) and a medium wing (5–6m) in light winds of 12–18kt
- The UAE's flat Gulf water is ideal for learning — no waves required
- Expect a steep learning curve in your first session; most people achieve first flight within 2–3 days
- Al Hamra (RAK), Dubai Kite Beach, and Abu Dhabi's Al Bateen are the top UAE learning spots
- Book a structured lesson — self-teaching on a hydrofoil is unsafe and risks costly equipment damage
SUP
Explore UAE coastlines by stand-up paddleboard
- Rent before buying — most UAE beaches and hotels rent SUPs for AED 100–200/hour
- Start on flat, calm water (Dubai Marina, Abu Dhabi Corniche) before trying open sea
- Begin kneeling before standing up — it's easier than it looks on calm water
- An inflatable iSUP is ideal for the UAE: lightweight, easy to transport, and stable in flat conditions
- Go out early (before 9am) for the calmest water and the most pleasant temperatures year-round
