The UAE is one of the Middle East's premier freediving destinations. The East Coast — particularly Musandam, Dibba, and Khor Fakkan — offers dramatic underwater landscapes including coral walls, swim-throughs, and historic shipwrecks, all within breath-holding distance of the surface.

Musandam's fjords (known locally as khors) are a world apart — towering limestone cliffs drop vertically into 30m+ of clear blue water. Dolphins, reef sharks, and vast schools of fish make every dive an encounter with wildlife. Several liveaboard operators run multi-day Musandam freediving expeditions from Khasab.

Getting Certified

The UAE has a thriving AIDA and SSI freediving school community in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Fujairah. A Level 1 course (2 days, pool + open water) costs AED 800–1,400 and certifies you to dive to 20m with a buddy. Level 2 extends that to 30m. Most schools run courses year-round.

Safety

Always freedive with a trained buddy and never hyperventilate before a dive. Shallow water blackout is the primary risk — proper AIDA training teaches recognition and rescue. UAE conditions are generally forgiving for trained freedivers.
