What to Expect Kayaking in the UAE
Kayaking in the UAE is a gateway to some of the country's most extraordinary natural landscapes. From the ancient mangrove forests of Khor Kalba — the oldest in Arabia, dating back over 4,000 years — to the dramatic limestone fjords of Musandam, the UAE offers kayaking experiences that rival any in the world.
The sport is accessible to virtually everyone. Flat-water mangrove paddling requires no experience whatsoever — guided tours handle navigation and safety while you focus on spotting herons, kingfishers, and (in flamingo season) flocks of pink birds wading in the shallows. Rental operators are widespread across the coast.
Mangrove Kayaking
Khor Kalba, Ras Al Khor (Dubai), and the Eastern Mangroves in Abu Dhabi are the go-to destinations for peaceful wildlife paddling. Sunset and sunrise tours are particularly popular — the light on the mangrove channels at golden hour is extraordinary. Tours run year-round with most operators.
Sea Kayaking — Musandam
Musandam's fjords (khors) offer world-class sea kayaking — towering 300m cliffs, crystal-clear water, and pods of dolphins that often accompany paddlers through the channels. Multi-day camping expeditions are possible in the quieter khors. This terrain is better suited to intermediate paddlers comfortable with open crossings in light swell.
