Hudayriyat Island: Abu Dhabi's New Outdoor Water Sports Hub
Until 2022, Abu Dhabi's water sports options were spread across the city with no obvious centre of gravity. Eastern Mangroves for kayaking and SUP. Yas Marina for jet skis. Corniche for swimming. Nothing that brought the various activities together in a single, properly organised destination.
Hudayriyat Island is Abu Dhabi's answer to that gap. A purpose-built outdoor sports island 15 minutes from downtown, it opened its beach and sports facilities in phases from 2021 onwards and now offers a cluster of activities that you can do back-to-back in a single day. The flagship water sports facilities are a cable wakeboard park, a kayak and SUP launch zone, and a sheltered bay purpose-designed for flat-water paddling.
Water Sports at Hudayriyat
Cable Wakeboarding
The Hudayriyat cable park is Abu Dhabi's primary wakeboard destination. An overhead cable system pulls riders around a 600-metre course set in a purpose-dug lagoon — no boat required.
The setup:
- Full cable (competition length) running the length of the lagoon
- 4–6 obstacles: kickers, rails, and a pyramid feature
- Beginner straight cable section (no obstacles) for first-time riders
- Equipment hire included in ride fee
- Instructors on deck for all beginner sessions
Pricing: AED 80–120 per hour (including equipment). Lesson packages available from AED 300 for a 2-hour beginner session.
Best for: Complete beginners wanting their first wakeboard experience in a safe, controlled environment. The cable at Hudayriyat is well-maintained and the staff are experienced with beginners.
Kayaking and SUP
A dedicated launch zone on the island's eastern side provides flat-water kayaking and SUP access to the channel between Hudayriyat and the adjacent island chain. The water is sheltered from the prevailing northwest wind, making it consistently calmer than the open Gulf.
Kayak and SUP rental: AED 60–100/hour. Tandem kayaks available. Guided mangrove tours (40–60 minutes) depart in the morning from the same launch point.
What you'll see: The channels between Hudayriyat and the smaller islands have mangrove fringing in places. Flamingos are occasionally present, particularly October–February. The skyline views back to Abu Dhabi are excellent for photography.
Beach and swimming
The island has a proper sand beach on the western face — wide, clean, and backed by the sports facilities. The water is shallow (1–2m for 100m offshore) making it safe for children and casual swimmers.
Beyond the Water: The Sports Circuit
Hudayriyat's appeal is the concentration of activity in one place. The outdoor circuit around the island includes:
- Cycling and running track — a signed loop around the island perimeter
- Bike rental — mountain bikes and road bikes available for hire
- Rock climbing wall — outdoor climbing facility near the main entrance
- Beach volleyball courts
- Zip line — aerial zip course across one of the island bays
The combination of water sports (morning) and dry activities (afternoon) makes Hudayriyat a full-day destination, particularly for families.
Food and Facilities
A cluster of cafes and food trucks operates near the main entrance — quality is functional rather than notable, primarily burgers and sandwiches. The island's development is ongoing; more F&B options are expected as the commercial zone expands.
Changing rooms, showers, and lockers are available at the beach entrance. Gear storage is provided for water sports equipment.

Comparing with Other Abu Dhabi Water Sports Options
| Venue | Best For | Distance from City | |---|---|---| | Hudayriyat Island | Cable wake, kayak/SUP, multi-activity day | 15 min | | Eastern Mangroves | Kayaking with wildlife, SUP, flamingos | 10 min | | Yas Marina | Jet ski, boat trips, sailing | 25 min | | Corniche beach | Casual swimming, paddling | 5 min |
Hudayriyat is the right choice if you want a structured, facilitated experience in a well-maintained environment — particularly if you're bringing children or introducing someone to water sports for the first time. The cable park is genuinely well-run and the setting, with Abu Dhabi's towers visible across the water, is striking.
