Beginner's Guide to Windsurfing in the UAE
Why the UAE is Great for Beginner Windsurfers
The UAE offers excellent conditions for learning to windsurf:
- Warm, shallow water — perfect for falling off and getting back on (which you'll do a lot as a beginner!)
- Consistent winds — trade winds and thermals provide reliable conditions year-round
- Certified schools — multiple RYA-certified and VDWS-certified instructors across the Emirates
- Flat water — especially in lagoons and sheltered bays around Abu Dhabi and Dubai
Getting Started: What to Expect
Your First Lesson
Beginner windsurfing lessons typically follow this structure:
- Land training (30–60 min) — learn to rig a sail, understand wind direction, practice on a simulator
- Water introduction — get comfortable on the board without the sail
- Your first tacks — turning the board with the sail up
- Basic sailing — sailing across and downwind
Most beginners can achieve basic sailing by the end of a 2-day beginner course.
Equipment for Beginners
Board: Wide, stable beginner boards (200+ litres volume) — much harder to capsize than the narrow boards you see racing.
Sail: Small sails (3.5–4.5 m²) are easiest to handle. Larger sails generate more power but are harder to control.
Best Schools in the UAE
Dubai
- Dubai Offshore Sailing Club (DOSC) — long-running club with RYA instruction
- Surf House Dubai — modern facility with beginner-friendly courses
Abu Dhabi
- Abu Dhabi Sailing & Yacht Club (ADSYC) — excellent flat-water venue, regular courses
Fujairah
- Fujairah Water Sports Club — East Coast conditions, combined with surfing and diving options
Wind Conditions by Emirate
Dubai/Abu Dhabi (West Coast):
- Summer: Shamal winds 15–30 knots (challenging for beginners)
- Winter: Lighter, more variable winds (10–15 knots, ideal for beginners)
Fujairah (East Coast):
- Winter: NE trade winds 10–20 knots, consistent and steady
- Summer: Light and variable
Verdict for beginners: Start in winter on the East Coast or in sheltered Abu Dhabi lagoons. Avoid the summer Shamal until you're comfortable.
Safety Tips
- Always windsurf with a buddy or within sight of a safety boat
- Wear a life jacket (buoyancy aid) when learning
- Never windsurf in offshore winds — you'll be blown out to sea
- Learn the International Distress Signal (sit on the board, arms out sideways)
- Check the forecast before heading out —
