Al Hamra: Ras Al Khaimah's Best Kitesurfing and Windsurfing Spot

Of all the UAE's kitesurfing spots, Al Hamra in Ras Al Khaimah has the strongest claim to being the best. Not the most accessible from Dubai, not the most organised, but the best for actual riding.

The Shamal winds β€” the northwesterlies that define Gulf water sports from May through September β€” hit RAK first and hit hardest. By the time the same wind system arrives at Dubai Kite Beach 90 minutes south, it has been partially disrupted by coastal features and urban heat. At Al Hamra, with the Hajar Mountains to the east blocking thermals and the open Gulf to the northwest, the flow is clean.

The lagoon makes it special. A shallow bay enclosed by the breakwater of Al Hamra marina produces 2km of flat, warm, knee-to-waist-deep water that is ideal for practising transitions and freestyle β€” and for learning, because a fall at speed in 60cm of water is far gentler than falling in chop.

The Wind

Shamal season (May–September): 18–28 knots NNW is the norm; 30+ knot days occur several times per month. Mornings (8am–12pm) are most consistent and typically less gusty than afternoons. August is usually the peak month.

Transition months (April, October): Lighter and more variable β€” 12–18kt on good days. Still rideable but forecast-dependent.

Winter (November–March): The Shamal largely disappears. Northeast trades provide occasional wind sessions (10–18kt), but this is the shoulder season for kite/wind. Most regulars shift to Fujairah diving in winter.

Forecast tip: Al Hamra catches wind 1–2 hours before Dubai Kite Beach. If the forecast shows 15kt at Kite Beach by midday, Al Hamra will have that wind by 10am.

The Lagoon

The lagoon in front of Al Hamra marina is approximately 1km wide and 2km long, enclosed on three sides. Water depth varies with the tide:

  • High tide: 1–1.5m across most of the lagoon β€” good for foiling and freestyle
  • Low tide: 0.4–0.8m in the shallower sections β€” ideal for beginners who want to walk upright after a fall

The sandy bottom means no reef hazards. The lagoon exit to the open Gulf is through a narrow channel β€” intermediate and advanced riders often kite out into the open Gulf for downwind runs along the RAK coast, but beginners should stay inside.

Potential hazard: Jet skis from Al Hamra marina occasionally enter the lagoon. Give way to all motorised vessels and stay aware of the marina entrance.

Schools and Operators

RAK Watersports β€” the largest operator at Al Hamra. IKO-certified kitesurfing instruction, windsurfing lessons, and equipment rental. Long-term storage available for kite bag.

RAK Wing Foil School β€” operates from the same beach; specialises in wing foiling; also offers kitesurfing instruction. Good for advanced foiling progression.

Lesson pricing:

  • Kitesurfing beginner course (8 hours): AED 1,200–1,600
  • Windsurfing beginner (3 hours): AED 400–600
  • Wing foiling fundamentals (2 days): AED 1,200–1,400
  • Equipment rental: AED 200–350 per 2-hour session

Windsurfing at Al Hamra

While kitesurfing dominates, Al Hamra has one of the UAE's most active windsurfing communities. The flat lagoon is ideal for learning and the consistent Shamal means multiple sessions per week in summer.

RAK Watersports has a fleet of beginner boards and rigs (typically 5.0–7.0m sails, 160–250L boards) that cover all skill levels. Intermediate and advanced windsurfers can rent smaller boards and sails for the stronger wind.

The main windsurfing beach section is north of the main kite launch area β€” this separation avoids most conflicts between the two sports.

Getting to Al Hamra

From Dubai: 1h15m via E311 north to RAK; exit toward Al Hamra. The kite beach is behind Al Hamra Village and marina.

Parking: Free, on the beach access road.

Accommodation: Al Hamra Fort Hotel and Al Hamra Village resort are directly adjacent β€” convenient for multi-day trips. Both have reasonable rates compared to Dubai equivalents.

Al Hamra vs. Dubai Kite Beach: Which to Choose

| Factor | Al Hamra | Dubai Kite Beach | |---|---|---| | Wind strength | Stronger and more consistent | Good but less reliable | | Water conditions | Flat lagoon | Choppy open Gulf | | Crowd level | Moderate | Very busy in peak season | | Organisation | Less structured | Well-signed zones | | Distance from Dubai | 75 min | 20 min | | Schools | 3–4 operators | 5–6 operators |

Verdict: If you're learning or want the best riding conditions, Al Hamra wins. If you need the convenience of a 20-minute drive from Dubai, Kite Beach is the practical choice.

Al Hamra is RAK's quiet pride β€” a world-class lagoon used by a fraction of the people who could be using it. The two-hour round trip from Dubai is worth it for a full day of clean Shamal wind.
