Wing foiling — also called winging or wing surfing — is the fastest-growing water sport in the UAE. A handheld inflatable wing powers you across the water on a hydrofoil board, lifting you silently above the surface at speeds of 15–35 knots. No lines, no mast, no waves required.

The Shamal Season (May–October)

The UAE's West Coast Shamal winds are tailor-made for wing foiling. Consistent 15–28 knot NW winds blow across the flat, warm Gulf waters from late spring through autumn, providing ideal conditions for beginners and experts alike. Abu Dhabi's Al Bateen Beach, Umm Al Quwain lagoon, and Ras Al Khaimah are the standout Shamal-season spots.

Year-Round Options

Outside the Shamal season, the East Coast picks up NE trade winds, and Abu Dhabi's sea breeze keeps afternoon sessions viable through much of the year. Wing foiling's efficiency in lighter wind (10–15kn) gives it an advantage over kitesurfing in marginal conditions.

Why Wing Foiling Is Perfect for the UAE

Flat, warm water; reliable wind; year-round access; and a rapidly growing community of instructors and rental operators make the UAE one of the best places in the world to learn wing foiling. Most beginners achieve their first sustained foil ride within 4–8 hours — faster than kitesurfing or windsurfing for many people.

Getting Started

How to Learn Wing Foiling

Most students go from zero to foiling in a single weekend with a qualified instructor.

01

Wing Control on Land

Master the wing on land — depowering, powering, and steering before you ever touch the water.

02

Body Dragging

Float in shallow water while the wing pulls you. Learn body position and how to use the wind window.

03

Riding the Board

Stand on the board and ride without foil lift. Practice balance and wing trim while moving.

04

First Foil Lifts

The magic moment. The foil lifts you above the surface — initially in bursts, then sustained.

05

Sustained Foiling

Ride in a straight line, controlled and balanced. Most students reach this within 4–8 hours total.

06

Tacking & Gybing

Change direction while staying on the foil. This opens up the full range of wing foiling exploration.
