Al Aqah Beach
Al Aqah is the UAE's most popular surf and dive beach — home to Sandy Beach Hotel, Snoopy Island snorkelling, and gentle beginner waves. The perfect East Coast base camp.
Overview
Al Aqah is the undisputed hub of the UAE's East Coast water sports scene. Located approximately 160km from Dubai on the Fujairah coast, this crescent of golden sand sits at the base of the Hajar Mountains, faces directly onto the Indian Ocean, and benefits from consistent winter swells, calm turquoise water, and the best shore diving in the UAE.
The famous Sandy Beach Hotel anchors the beach and serves as the social centre of the UAE surf and dive community — offering board rentals, dive equipment hire, boat trips, and accommodation ranging from beachside chalets to hotel rooms.
Surfing
Al Aqah's main break is a mellow, forgiving beach break — one of the best beginner surf spots in the UAE. The sandy bottom, gentle gradient, and typically 0.5–1.0m waves (with occasional larger sets in December–January) make it an excellent learning environment.
Wave characteristics:
- Type: Beach break, gentle peaks
- Best swell direction: NE–E
- Best wind: Light and offshore (W), mornings are best
- Best months: October–April
- Crowd level: The busiest East Coast break — weekends get crowded
Surf lessons and board hire are available at Sandy Beach Hotel and from independent instructors on the beach. Group lessons for absolute beginners run most weekends during winter.
Diving and Snorkelling
The star of Al Aqah is Snoopy Island — a small rocky outcrop 100 metres offshore named for its resemblance to the famous cartoon dog lying on his kennel. The island forms one of the UAE's finest shore-entry dive and snorkel sites.
Snoopy Island highlights:
- Coral gardens in 3–10m, accessible without a boat
- Hawksbill sea turtles (regularly spotted year-round)
- Schools of glassfish, sweetlips, angelfish, and surgeonfish
- Sandy channels between coral heads — great for underwater photography
- Visibility typically 8–15m, up to 20m in winter
Entry: Wade from Sandy Beach Hotel's beach. A long-sleeve rash guard and reef-safe sunscreen are essential. Snorkel rental available at the hotel.
Deeper diving: Boat trips to Martini Rock, Shark Island, and the Inchcape wrecks depart from the hotel's dive centre.
Stand-Up Paddleboarding
The calm, sheltered waters in front of Al Aqah's beach are excellent for stand-up paddleboarding. Early morning sessions (before the sea breeze builds) provide mirror-flat conditions. Paddling towards Snoopy Island gives a unique above-water view of the reef below.
Rental: Available at Sandy Beach Hotel (AED 100–150 per hour).
Getting There
Al Aqah is approximately 160km from Dubai (2 hours via E611) and 30km north of Fujairah city. The Sandy Beach Hotel is the key landmark — all water sports facilities are concentrated here.
Parking: Free at Sandy Beach Hotel beach access point.
