Overview

Khor Kalba is a tidal estuary on the UAE's East Coast, within Sharjah emirate, containing the oldest and most northerly mangrove forest in Arabia. The khor (creek) was designated a RAMSAR Wetland of International Importance in 2021 — recognition of its extraordinary biodiversity in an otherwise arid landscape.

The mangrove channels are navigable by kayak and SUP, offering an experience completely unlike any other UAE water activity: quiet, wildlife-filled, and surrounded by dense green canopy.

Kayaking

The khor's network of channels is best explored by kayak. The main channel is wide and easy to navigate; the inner creeks narrow to a few metres across, with overhanging mangrove roots and the sounds of birds rather than jet skis.

Guided kayak tours run daily from sunrise (the best wildlife window) through late morning. Several operators provide double kayaks suitable for children, and the water is calm and shallow — no prior kayaking experience required.

Guided tours from: AED 180/person (2.5 hours, equipment included)

Wildlife

Khor Kalba is the only location in the UAE where the white-collared kingfisher (a distinct endemic subspecies) breeds. Other notable species:

  • Great white egret and grey heron — permanent residents
  • Western reef egret — forages on the tidal flats
  • Osprey — nests on the khor's outer islands
  • Flamingos — seasonal visitors in winter
  • Mudskippers and fiddler crabs — visible on the exposed mudflats at low tide

Snorkeling

The rocky coast immediately south of Khor Kalba has clear Indian Ocean water with good coral coverage and fish diversity — including schools of fusiliers, parrotfish, and the occasional reef shark. A 10-minute drive from the mangroves.

Combined mangrove kayak + reef snorkel tours are available from AED 320/person.

Getting There

Khor Kalba is 1.5–2 hours from Dubai via the Sharjah–Kalba road (E99). Drive through Kalba town and continue south along the coast — the mangrove reserve is signed from the Khor Kalba Corniche.

Parking is free at the reserve entrance.

Practical Information

  • Best visited from October to April — summer heat (45°C+) makes dawn the only practical window
  • Sunrise tours (6:00–8:30am) are the most popular; book in advance October–March
  • Bring insect repellent for dawn sessions
  • The reserve is managed by the Sharjah Environment and Protected Areas Authority
