Overview

Musandam is technically Omani territory but is accessible from the UAE without crossing the main Oman border. The Khasab border crossing from Ras Al Khaimah brings you into a dramatic landscape of towering limestone cliffs plunging into turquoise inlets.

Diving

Musandam's waters are among the clearest in the region, with visibility regularly exceeding 20 metres. The cold, nutrient-rich currents attract pelagic species including hammerhead sharks (seasonally), whale sharks, and dolphins.

Top dive sites:

  • Lima Rock — wall dive with spectacular coral formations
  • Octopus Rock — moray eels, octopus, and reef sharks
  • Ras Sarkan — drift dive through a channel teeming with fish

Dhow Cruises

One of the most popular ways to experience Musandam is aboard a traditional dhow. Many operators offer day trips from Khasab combining snorkelling stops, dolphin watching, and lunch. Operators run trips from both Khasab and from the UAE side of the border.

Getting There

Musandam is approximately 200km from Dubai. Drive north through Ras Al Khaimah and cross the Tibat border post (no full Oman visa required for Musandam — a free entry permit is stamped at the border for most nationalities).

Practical Information

  • Bring your passport and vehicle documents
  • The drive through Ras Al Khaimah to Khasab is roughly 2.5 hours
  • Many Khasab dive operators offer pick-up from UAE hotels
