Overview

Khor Fakkan — meaning "Creek of Two Jaws" — is one of the most beautiful bays on the UAE's East Coast. The crescent-shaped harbour is flanked by dramatic Hajar Mountain cliffs and faces directly onto the Gulf of Oman, picking up Indian Ocean swells from October through April.

As a Sharjah enclave on the East Coast, Khor Fakkan has a more relaxed, traditional feel than the resort-heavy Fujairah beaches to the south. Accommodation options are limited, making it ideal for day trips from Fujairah or Sharjah city.

Surfing

The bay produces consistent beach break waves during the winter swell season, typically 0.5–1.2m with occasional bigger sets during December–January storm pulses. The northern end of the bay is the most reliable break, forming a gentle right-hander over a sandy bottom.

Why beginners love it:

  • Sandy bottom (no reef hazards)
  • Usually slower, longer waves than Fujairah's more exposed breaks
  • Fewer crowds than Al Aqah or Sandy Beach Hotel
  • Easy beach access with parking directly behind the break

Wave characteristics:

  • Type: Beach break, predominantly right-handers
  • Best swell direction: NE–E
  • Best wind: Offshore (W/SW) — morning sessions best
  • Crowd level: Low to moderate

Diving

Khor Fakkan has a small but vibrant dive scene centred on a cluster of rocky reefs and an artificial reef (sunken barge) accessible from the southern beach area. Visibility ranges from 8m to 20m depending on season and current.

Key dive sites:

  • The Khor Fakkan Barge — sunken cargo vessel at 18m, encrusted with hard coral and home to lionfish, moray eels, and batfish
  • North Point Reef — rocky pinnacles at 6–12m with excellent macro life including nudibranchs and frogfish
  • The Arch — a natural rock formation at 10m, popular for photographs

Dive centres in Fujairah run regular trips to Khor Fakkan, and one local operator based in the town also offers instruction and guided dives.

Getting There

Khor Fakkan is approximately 130km from Dubai (2 hours), 40km north of Fujairah city. The coastal road from Fujairah to Khor Fakkan passes several other surf spots and is one of the most scenic drives in the UAE.

Facilities

  • Public beach with facilities (showers, toilets, car park) — free access
  • Several local restaurants serving Emirati and South Asian food in town
  • Small supermarkets for supplies
  • Limited accommodation — most visitors day-trip from Fujairah
