Overview

Hudayriyat Island has been transformed from an undeveloped coastal strip into Abu Dhabi's premier outdoor leisure destination. The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge and is home to cycling trails, beach parks, climbing walls, and — most significantly for water sports enthusiasts — Surf Abu Dhabi, the UAE's first world-class artificial wave pool.

The island's open beach also benefits from consistent afternoon sea breezes and occasional Shamal conditions, making it a viable kitesurfing and wing foiling spot for Abu Dhabi-based riders who previously had no local option.

Surf Abu Dhabi — Wave Pool

The headline attraction for surfers is undeniable: a Wavegarden Cove wave pool generating consistent, shaped waves up to 2.5m for all skill levels. Unlike the East Coast's natural breaks, sessions at Surf Abu Dhabi can be booked in advance and the waves are guaranteed regardless of weather or season.

Who it suits:

  • Beginners: The beginner zone produces slow, gentle whitewater ideal for first-time surfers
  • Intermediate: Consistent green waves, 0.8–1.2m, for practising turns and improving technique
  • Advanced: Steep, fast performance waves during dedicated performance sessions

Kitesurfing and Wing Foiling (Beach)

The Hudayriyat beach area picks up afternoon sea breezes (12–18kn) most days during the cooler months and gets occasional Shamal influence in the Shamal season. It's not as powerful or consistent as RAK or UAQ, but for Abu Dhabi residents it offers convenient access without a long drive.

Several Abu Dhabi kite schools use Hudayriyat as an alternative to Al Bateen Beach, particularly for introductory lessons where lower winds are beneficial.

Other Activities

Hudayriyat Island is a genuinely great destination beyond water sports:

  • Cycling: 60km of paved cycling trails around the island
  • Clymb Abu Dhabi: Indoor skydiving and the world's tallest indoor climbing wall, adjacent to the beach area
  • F&B: Several beach cafes and restaurants on the island
  • Beach Park: Landscaped park with shade, facilities, and direct beach access

Getting There

Hudayriyat Island is approximately 10km from central Abu Dhabi, accessible via the Hudayriyat Bridge off the Western Ring Road. Free parking is plentiful on the island. From Dubai, allow approximately 90 minutes via the E11.
