Overview

Al Hamra Beach sits at the southern end of Ras Al Khaimah's Gulf coastline, backed by the Al Hamra Village resort development. The location exposes it directly to the Shamal β€” the powerful north-westerly wind system that dominates the UAE's Arabian Gulf coast from May through October.

Wind sports enthusiasts from across the UAE regularly make the journey north specifically for Al Hamra's conditions: stronger, more consistent Shamal winds than spots further south, and a long, open beach with relatively clear water.

Wind Sports Conditions

| Month | Avg Wind (kn) | Character | |---|---|---| | May | 16–22 | Building Shamal, patchy | | Jun | 20–28 | Full Shamal, very reliable | | Jul | 22–30 | Peak season, gusty possible | | Aug | 20–28 | Consistent and powerful | | Sep | 16–24 | Tapering, still good | | Oct | 12–18 | Lighter, thermal mix |

The water is warm year-round (28–33Β°C in summer) and relatively flat inside the lagoon area adjacent to the beach, making it excellent for wing foiling and beginner kitesurfing after initial training.

Kitesurfing

The open beach provides excellent kite-launching space, and the designated water sports zone runs parallel to the beach for approximately 2km. The Shamal typically arrives mid-morning and peaks in the early afternoon.

Who it suits: Intermediate to advanced kitesurfers. The Shamal can gust unpredictably, especially in June–July, and the open Gulf provides limited escape routes if gear fails. Less experienced riders should choose UAQ Lagoon instead.

Wing Foiling

Al Hamra's Shamal conditions are outstanding for wing foiling β€” the combination of power and flat water produces fast, high-performance sessions. The RAK Wing Foil School (see Schools directory) operates from a nearby beach and runs guided downwinder sessions along the coast using the Shamal.

Windsurfing

The powerful, consistent wind is a magnet for experienced windsurfers seeking planing conditions. Equipment rental is not available at Al Hamra itself β€” bring your own or rent in Dubai and transport up.

Getting There

Al Hamra is approximately 100km from Dubai (75 minutes via E11). Turn off towards Al Hamra Village resort. The beach is accessible via the resort road; parking is available in designated areas.

Facilities

  • Resort beach club (fee-based access or hotel guests)
  • Public beach access at the northern end (free)
  • Limited food options on the beach β€” bring supplies
  • No gear rental on-site; RAK Wing Foil School operates from a nearby beach (transport available)
