Wetsuits & Water Temperature in the UAE — What to Wear All Year
The UAE has a reputation for endless sunshine and tropical warmth, but water temperatures vary more than visitors expect — especially on the East Coast (Indian Ocean) in winter. Getting your wetsuit choice right means staying in the water longer, surfing better, and not spending money on gear you don't need.
UAE Water Temperature by Month
The UAE has two coastlines with different thermal characteristics. The Gulf (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, RAK) is shallower and warms more quickly in summer but also cools faster in winter. The Indian Ocean side (Fujairah, Khor Fakkan, Dibba) is deeper and more thermally stable.
| Month | Gulf (Dubai) | Indian Ocean (Fujairah) | |-------|-------------|------------------------| | January | 20–22°C | 23–25°C | | February | 20–22°C | 22–24°C | | March | 23–25°C | 24–26°C | | April | 26–28°C | 26–28°C | | May | 29–31°C | 28–30°C | | June | 31–33°C | 30–32°C | | July | 33–35°C | 31–33°C | | August | 33–35°C | 31–33°C | | September | 32–34°C | 30–32°C | | October | 29–31°C | 28–30°C | | November | 25–28°C | 26–28°C | | December | 22–24°C | 23–26°C |
Wetsuit Thickness Guide
Rash Guard / 0.5mm (May–November, Gulf side)
In summer, the water is warmer than most swimming pools. You need protection from UV radiation and the chafe of a kite harness or board rails — not from cold. A long-sleeve UPF50+ rash guard is all you need for the surface. For diving, a thin 1mm Lycra suit provides minimal warmth but good UV and stinger protection.
2–3mm Shorty (October–November, March–April)
A shorty (short arms, short legs) in 2–3mm neoprene suits the shoulder seasons perfectly. It provides warmth in the water without the bulk of a full suit. Particularly useful for kitesurfers and surfers who get cold between sessions. Wetsuit shorts (2mm) under a rash guard is another popular option.
3mm Full Suit (December–February, East Coast)
For winter sessions at Fujairah, a 3mm full suit is the standard choice. The Indian Ocean drops to 22–24°C in February — cold enough to feel uncomfortable after 30–40 minutes without a suit. A 3mm suit with a sealed chest zip or back zip provides adequate thermal protection for 1–2 hour surf or kite sessions.
For divers, a 3mm full suit is recommended for any East Coast dive from November to March.
5mm Full Suit (January–February, Gulf side; cold water divers)
If you're kitesurfing or windsurfing on the Gulf in January–February (water at 20–22°C) and doing long sessions with lots of crashes, a 5mm suit is worth the investment. Less common among UAE locals who are more cold-adapted, but expats from colder climates often find 3mm insufficient at these temperatures.
For divers doing multiple dives per day in winter, a 5mm suit significantly reduces accumulated heat loss.
Hood, Boots & Gloves
Rarely necessary in the UAE, even in winter. Some divers doing dawn January dives in the Gulf use a 2–3mm hood for comfort. Wetsuit boots (2–3mm) are useful for reef entries on rocky East Coast beaches to protect feet from urchins and sharp coral — not primarily for warmth.

Rent or Buy?
Buy if:
- You surf, kite, or dive more than twice a month
- You have a long-term visa or plan multiple UAE visits
- You want a consistent fit (rental suits are often stretched and poorly maintained)
Rent if:
- You're visiting for less than 2 weeks
- You're trying the sport for the first time
- You're between sizes (a good rental is better than a badly fitted purchased suit)
Rental wetsuits are available from most UAE dive centres and surf schools at AED 30–80/day. Always check the zip function and test for flexibility before accepting a rental.
Care & Storage
UAE sun and heat degrade neoprene significantly faster than temperate climates:
- Rinse with fresh water after every session — salt, sand, and sunscreen break down neoprene
- Dry inside-out in shade — never dry in direct UAE sun (UV degrades neoprene rapidly)
- Store flat or loosely folded — hanging a wetsuit by its shoulders distorts the shoulders and shortens lifespan
- Use wetsuit shampoo/conditioner monthly to maintain flexibility
A well-maintained 3mm suit in UAE conditions should last 3–5 years with regular use.
UV Sun Protection — The Overlooked Layer
In the UAE, UV protection is as important as thermal protection. The UV index regularly reaches 11+ (extreme) from April to October. Even in winter, midday UV can reach 7–8 (high). For water sports:
- Long-sleeve rash guard for kitesurfing, SUP, and snorkeling in warm months
- Waterproof SPF50+ on all exposed skin, reapplied every 90 minutes
- Neoprene hood in summer protects the scalp during long kite sessions (or use a water sports cap)
