Al Aqah: Fujairah's Dive Resort Strip Guide
Al Aqah is a small coastal settlement 15 kilometres north of Fujairah city, and it has gradually become the centre of gravity for East Coast diving in the UAE. The reason is straightforward: Snoopy Island.
The island — formally known as Jazirat Al Ghubb — sits 150 metres offshore, clearly visible from the beach. It rises only a few metres above sea level and looks unremarkable from the surface. Below the waterline, a shallow reef wraps the entire island perimeter, and on the north side a wall drops to 18 metres. Coral coverage is among the highest of any accessible UAE reef site. Hawksbill turtles are resident. Fish density is extraordinary.
Because the island is reachable without a boat, Al Aqah has become the default base for both committed divers and casual snorkellers — and three major resort dive centres have clustered around it.
Snoopy Island in Detail
The island has three distinct dive/snorkel profiles:
South and east face — shallow reef Depth 3–8m. Best for snorkeling and beginner diving. Excellent coral coverage, dense reef fish, and the most reliable turtle encounters. Enter from the beach at Sandy Beach Hotel (fee applies) or the public beach access points north of the resort strip.
North face — wall dive Depth 5–18m. A steep wall with sea fans, soft corals, and regular encounters with large angelfish and grouper. Access by boat (10-minute ride) or a long swim around the island.
East tip — current site A productive but advanced site: strong tidal current brings pelagics including barracuda, trevally, and occasional reef sharks. Dive only with local knowledge of tide times.
Other Dive Sites Near Al Aqah
The Caves — 5km north of Snoopy Island. A series of shallow caverns (max 12m) with soft coral decorating the ceilings and large moray eels in residence. Boat access only.
Ras Deba — A rocky headland 3km south. Mixed reef and boulder dive with sand channels between formations. Good macro life: nudibranch, cuttlefish, flatworm.
Car Cemetery — An artificial reef created by sinking retired vehicles offshore. Now colonised by algae and invertebrates; unusual for photography.
Dive Centres
Three PADI dive centres operate from the Al Aqah resort strip:
Sandy Beach Diving Centre (attached to Sandy Beach Hotel) The longest-running dive operator in Al Aqah. Offers fun dives, all PADI courses from Discover Scuba to Divemaster, and snorkel tours to Snoopy Island. Fun dive: AED 150 per tank (own equipment); AED 200 with equipment.
Fujairah Adventure Centre (Seven Tides/Hilton area) PADI affiliated; specialises in courses for hotel guests. Equipment rental, boat trips, and a dedicated snorkel program for non-divers.
Dibba Dive Center outpost (northern end of the resort strip) Run by the same team as the Dibba Dive Center; focuses on liveaboard departures and advanced technical diving. Good option for already-certified divers who want boat dives without committing to a lesson.
Snorkeling Without Diving Certification
Al Aqah is the UAE's best destination for uncertified snorkellers wanting a genuine underwater experience:
- Snoopy Island's south face is 3–5m deep and within 200m of the beach — reachable by any competent swimmer
- Turtles approach snorkellers regularly (do not touch or chase — they will stay if approached calmly)
- Coral coverage and fish density are impressive enough that most people describe it as the best snorkelling they've done outside a tropical resort
Snorkel gear rental: Available from Sandy Beach Hotel (AED 30–50 for mask/snorkel/fins). Quality varies — bring your own if possible.
When to Go
| Season | Conditions | |---|---| | October–November | Water cooling from summer highs; visibility building; whale sharks occasionally seen offshore | | December–February | Peak conditions: visibility 20–25m, water 23–25°C, best fish activity | | March–April | Good diving; water warming; clarity excellent | | May–September | Hot; visibility can drop to 8–15m; diving possible but not ideal |
Where to Stay
Sandy Beach Hotel — the original dive resort; directly on the beach opposite Snoopy Island; dated but functional; diving package rates available. Well-suited for self-sufficient divers.
Fujairah Rotana (5km south) — better facilities; slightly further from Snoopy Island but has its own beach and diving programme.
Le Méridien Al Aqah Beach Resort — premium option; good pools and spa; diving facilities adequate but not specialist.
Getting There
From Dubai: 1h45m via E611 to Masafi, then E84 to Dibba road; Al Aqah is signposted 10km before Dibba.
From Fujairah city: 15–20 minutes north on the coast road.
Parking: All major hotels have car parks. Public beach access has informal parking on the roadside.
Al Aqah is the East Coast's most complete dive destination: accessible reef, accommodation integrated with the dive centres, and the best beginner-accessible underwater site in the UAE.
