Ras Al Khaimah sits at the northern tip of the UAE, where the Musandam Peninsula meets the southern Gulf. This geography gives RAK some of the most consistent Shamal wind in the country — often 2–5 knots stronger than Dubai on the same day — and a completely uncrowded coastline. Best Water Sports Spots in RAK
Al Hamra Beach
Al Hamra is the main kite and windsurf beach in RAK. A wide, sandy beach with a clear northwest-facing fetch means clean Shamal wind without coastal obstruction. The beach has:
- Dedicated kite launch zones
- Flat water on the sheltered side of the beach
- A small wave area on the outer bay on bigger swell days
- Cafes and beach club facilities
The Al Hamra development (hotels, marina, residential) has added infrastructure without dramatically increasing crowd levels. It remains far quieter than Kite Beach in Dubai.
Al Marjan Island
The artificial island cluster off RAK's coast has a long, exposed beach on its western side that catches the Shamal well. The sheltered eastern lagoon is excellent for beginners — almost completely flat, shallow, and safe. Windsurf and SUP rentals are available from the island's beach clubs.
RAK Corniche
The public beach along RAK's main corniche is sheltered and calm. Not suitable for kitesurfing, but excellent for SUP, kayaking, and family swimming. Sunrise paddles along the corniche with mountain views are a local favourite.
Kitesurfing in RAK
RAK's combination of consistent Shamal and flat Gulf water makes it one of the UAE's best kitesurf destinations, particularly for:
- Foiling: The flat water and steady wind are perfect for kite foil speed runs

Windsurfing in RAK
The RAK windsurfing community is small but passionate. Al Hamra beach is the main spot. The Shamal produces clean, strong runs in the 20–30+ knot range during peak winter months. RAK occasionally hosts inter-club windsurfing races — ask at the local school for event schedules.
For lighter wind days, Al Marjan Island's sheltered side offers glassy conditions for freestyle windsurfing and sail practice.

The proximity to Musandam is RAK's biggest dive asset. Dive operators in RAK run day trips to Musandam's fjords and reefs in 1.5–2 hours by boat. Local RAK Reefs
Several reefs and artificial reef structures sit within 30 minutes of RAK's coast. Visibility is typically 5–10 m — lower than Musandam but accessible for casual dives without the longer boat journey. Ideal for newly certified divers logging early post-certification dives.
Getting to RAK from Dubai
- By car: 90–110 minutes on E11 (Emirates Road). Free parking at Al Hamra beach.
- By bus: RTA buses connect Dubai to RAK, but for water sports the car is more practical (gear transport).
- Taxi: AED 150–200 each way from Dubai.
Many Dubai kitesurfers and windsurfers make RAK a regular weekend day trip, driving up early to catch the morning session before the wind peaks in early afternoon.
Accommodation in RAK
RAK has grown significantly as a tourist destination. Options range from budget guesthouses to 5-star resort hotels on Al Marjan Island. Staying overnight makes sense if you want two day sessions back-to-back — accommodation is notably cheaper than Dubai equivalents.
