Dibba: The UAE's Best Snorkeling and Diving Destination
Dibba is where the UAE's diving community has quietly gathered for decades. Spread across three administrative zones — Dibba Al Fujairah (UAE), Dibba Al Hisn (Sharjah), and Dibba Muscat (Oman) — the town sits at the northern tip of the East Coast, directly at the entrance to the Musandam Peninsula.
The water here is different. Nutrient-rich upwellings from deeper Musandam channels push cold, plankton-rich water into the bay. The result: extraordinary biodiversity, regular pelagic visitors, and visibility that regularly exceeds 20 metres in the cooler months.
What Lives Here
Reef fish and invertebrates
The rocky reefs and boulder fields around Dibba support dense populations of reef fish: humphead parrotfish, Napoleon wrasse, schools of fusilier, lionfish on every overhang, and cleaning stations busy with surgeonfish. The biodiversity index is notably higher here than on the central East Coast — likely a function of the upwelling and the relative lack of development.
Pelagics
Dibba is one of very few UAE locations where pelagic species are regularly encountered from shore-accessible dive sites:
- Whale sharks — October is the peak month. The plankton bloom that follows summer brings whale sharks in from open water, and the bay has produced consistent sightings for the past decade. Morning snorkel tours from Dibba port specifically target whale shark season.
- Sea turtles — Hawksbill and green turtles are resident on the reefs; sightings year-round but most common October–April
- Reef sharks — Blacktip and whitetip reef sharks are common at the deeper sites (12–18m)
- Hammerhead sharks — Occasional at depth; more reliably seen at Musandam sites to the north
Macro life
The sand between boulder fields is excellent for macro: flamboyant cuttlefish (rare but present), octopus, stonefish (watch where you put your feet), and nudibranch species that attract dedicated macro photographers.
Best Dive and Snorkel Sites
Martini Rock
The most famous site in the Dibba area. An offshore pinnacle rising from 22m to 6m — surrounded by strong current on three sides and almost always productive. Best reached by boat (10-minute ride from Dibba port). Expect schools of barracuda, tuna on the current face, and almost certain turtle encounters.
Depth: 6–22m | Level: Intermediate–Advanced | Best months: Oct–Mar
Snoopy Island (Lima Rock East)
The most accessible site in the region — a small rocky island 150 metres offshore from the Sandy Beach Hotel, reachable by swimming from the beach. Shallow (3–8m) with rich coral coverage and excellent snorkeling. The island's rocky north face has a deeper wall (to 18m) suitable for divers.
Depth: 3–18m | Level: Beginner (north side) | Best months: year-round
Ras Lima
A rocky headland site with multiple dive profiles available: shallow reef (4–8m), wall section (to 20m), and sand channels between boulders. Strong current can develop on incoming tides — dive on slack or with a dive guide familiar with the conditions.
Depth: 4–20m | Level: Intermediate | Best months: Oct–Apr
The Aquarium (near Dibba Rock)
Named for the density of fish life. A protected bay with minimal current and excellent visibility — ideal for first dives or underwater photography. Clownfish in every anemone, large pufferfish, and schools of glassfish that create silver curtains around the boulders.
Depth: 3–12m | Level: Beginner | Best months: Oct–Apr
Snorkeling Without a Boat
Several excellent snorkel spots are accessible without a boat:
Snoopy Island — swim from Sandy Beach Hotel beach (AED 20–30 entry fee). The island has a marked snorkel trail and is arguably the best non-boat snorkel site in the UAE.
Dibba Rock — a small reef visible from shore at low tide, directly accessible from the public beach near Dibba port. Best in early morning before boat traffic starts.
Khor Fakkan (30 min south) — not technically Dibba, but the town's breakwater and pier have excellent fish life for anyone who doesn't want to swim far from shore.
Dive Operators
Multiple PADI-certified operators run daily boat trips from Dibba port:
- Dibba Dive Center — the longest-established operator; runs morning and afternoon trips; fun dives AED 150–200 per tank
- Sandy Beach Diving Centre — attached to Sandy Beach Hotel; convenient for resort guests; PADI Open Water courses available
- Several Musandam-based operators offer Dibba as a starting point for multi-day liveaboard itineraries
Whale shark tours: In October specifically, several operators run dedicated early-morning snorkel trips targeting whale sharks (AED 200–350 per person including equipment). Book ahead — these fill up.
When to Go
| Month | Conditions | |---|---| | October | Best month: whale shark season, visibility building, water cooling from 31°C to 28°C | | November–February | Peak diving: 20–25m visibility, 23–25°C water, all pelagics active | | March–April | Still excellent; visibility begins to drop slightly as water warms | | May–September | Hot, humid, reduced visibility (5–15m); diving still possible early morning |
Getting There
From Dubai: 2 hours via E611 and E102 to Fujairah, then north 30 minutes on the coast road. Total ~2.5 hours.
From Fujairah City: 30 minutes north on the coastal road.
Accommodation: Sandy Beach Hotel has the best location for divers (literally next to Snoopy Island). Budget options in Dibba town.
Dibba rewards anyone willing to make the drive. October with a whale shark is one of the genuinely remarkable underwater experiences available in the Middle East — and you don't need advanced certification to have it.
