Umm Al Quwain — Al Sinniyah Flats
Umm Al Quwain's shallow lagoon and protected Al Sinniyah flats offer ideal flat-water conditions for beginners learning to kitesurf or windsurf, with calm snorkelling just offshore.
Umm Al Quwain — A Hidden Gem
Umm Al Quwain is one of the UAE's least-visited emirates, and its water sports scene is a well-kept secret. The Al Sinniyah Island lagoon creates a large, sheltered flat-water area with knee-to-waist-deep water — absolutely perfect for beginner and progression kiters and windsurfers.
Why UAQ?
- Flat water: The lagoon is almost always flat, with no boat traffic or waves to contend with
- Consistent wind: Winter sea breezes of 12–20 knots make for easy, enjoyable sessions
- Uncrowded: Unlike Dubai or Fujairah, you'll often have the water to yourself
- Affordable: Gear rental and lesson costs are significantly lower than in Dubai
Kitesurfing
The Umm Al Quwain lagoon is regarded as one of the best learning environments in the UAE. The shallow, warm water means that even if you drop your kite, you can stand up and relaunch. Several IKO-certified instructors operate from the beach.
Session tips:
- Book lessons in advance — the handful of schools here fill up quickly in winter
- Morning sessions (7–11am) often have the most consistent wind
- Watch for the designated swimming areas and stay clear
Windsurfing
UAQ's consistent 12–18 knot breeze is excellent for windsurfing. The flat lagoon allows beginners to learn in safety and gives intermediate riders a chance to drill technique. Freestyle and formula boards both work well here.
Snorkelling & Diving
Offshore from UAQ's main beach lie small coral patch reefs with surprisingly rich marine life. Visibility is typically 8–12 metres in winter. Look out for:
- Arabian angelfish and parrotfish
- Sea turtles (common October–March)
- Nudibranchs on the rocky outcrops
- Occasional reef sharks in deeper water
No dedicated dive centre operates in UAQ, but day trips from Fujairah operators run here seasonally.
Getting There
UAQ is located 50 km north of Dubai on Emirates Road (E611). The kite/windsurf beach is signposted off the main corniche road. Free parking on site.
Facilities
- Basic beach amenities (showers, toilets)
- Small kite school with limited rental equipment
- A few beachside restaurants along the corniche (10-minute drive)
Tips for First-Timers
- Check the UAQ Marine Club Facebook page for wind updates and lesson availability
- Bring sun protection — the flat open lagoon offers zero shade
- The lagoon floor is sandy with some seagrass patches — water shoes recommended
- Mobile signal can be patchy; download offline maps before travelling
