Overview

Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) is the UAE's northernmost emirate, bordering Musandam to the north and the Hajar Mountains to the east. The long, relatively uncrowded beach stretches offer excellent kitesurfing conditions during Shamal season, and the emirate is investing in water sports infrastructure.

Kitesurfing in RAK

The Shamal wind (NW/W) blows consistently from May to September, reaching 20–30 knots on peak days. RAK's beaches are wide and uncrowded — a stark contrast to Dubai's busy spots.

Best spots:

  • Al Hamra Village Beach — dedicated kite area, schools nearby
  • Flamingo Beach — long stretch, good for freeriding
  • Al Jazirah Al Hamra — historic pearl village area with flat water

Al Hamra Kite School

The Al Hamra Kite School is RAK's main kitesurfing school, offering IKO-certified courses from beginner through advanced. Equipment rental is also available.

Getting There

RAK is approximately 90km north of Dubai — a 60-minute drive on the E11 (Emirates Road). The journey is straightforward and well signposted.

Stay & Explore

RAK has excellent resort accommodation including Waldorf Astoria and InterContinental. The emirate is also famous for adventure activities in the Hajar Mountains including the world's longest zipline at Jebel Jais.
