Windsurfing Gear Guide for the UAE
A complete guide to windsurfing equipment suited to UAE conditions — boards, sails, masts, and accessories for West and East Coast riding.
Windsurfing Equipment Overview
Windsurfing gear has become more approachable in recent years. Modern equipment is lighter, faster to rig, and easier to learn on than previous generations.
The Board
Volume and Stability
Board volume (in litres) determines stability. More volume = more stable = easier for beginners.
| Level | Volume | Board Type | |---|---|---| | Complete beginner | 200–250L | Wide, flat-bottomed beginner board | | Improving beginner | 150–200L | Intermediate freeride board | | Intermediate | 100–150L | Freeride / freerace | | Advanced | 80–100L | Slalom / wave board |
Board Shapes for UAE
Flat-water (Dubai, Abu Dhabi lagoons): Wide freeride or freerace boards work best. Look for a broad nose and planing hull.
East Coast waves (Fujairah): Wave boards (90–110L) allow tight turns in the surf, but you'll need good skills to use them effectively.
The Sail
Sail size (in square metres) is determined by wind strength and rider weight.
| Wind (knots) | 60kg rider | 75kg rider | 90kg rider | |---|---|---|---| | 8–12 | 7.5–8.5m² | 8.5–10m² | 10m²+ | | 12–18 | 5.5–7.0m² | 6.5–7.5m² | 7.5–9.0m² | | 18–25 | 4.5–5.5m² | 5.0–6.0m² | 5.5–6.5m² | | 25–30+ | 3.5–4.5m² | 4.0–5.0m² | 4.5–5.5m² |
For UAE Shamal season: 4.5–6.0m² covers most conditions. For light East Coast winter winds: 6.5–8.0m² gives the best performance.
Mast, Boom, and Extension
- Mast: Match the luff length of your sail. Carbon masts are lighter and more responsive.
- Boom: Adjustable aluminium or carbon boom. Carbon is significantly lighter.
- Extension: Allows you to adjust the mast base length to different sail sizes.
Accessories
- Harness: Spreader bar type (seat or waist) allows you to hook into the boom and use body weight instead of arm strength.
- Footstraps: Essential once you're planing. Helps control the board at speed.
- Wetsuit: A shorty (2mm) is comfortable Oct–Mar on the East Coast.
