Surfboards Guide for UAE Conditions
Choose the right surfboard for UAE's beach breaks and reef waves. From foamies for beginners to performance shortboards for experienced surfers.
Choosing the Right Surfboard for UAE Waves
UAE waves are generally smaller and less powerful than Atlantic or Pacific swells, typically ranging from 0.5m to 1.5m. This influences which boards work best here.
Board Types
Foam / Soft-Top (Beginner)
The best choice for beginners and anyone who falls off a lot (everyone learning).
- Volume: 70–100L
- Length: 8'0"–9'6"
- Pros: Soft, safe, very stable, easy to paddle
- Cons: Less responsive, harder to perform turns
Recommendation: Catch Surf Odysea Log or Similar
Longboard (9'0"+)
Ideal for UAE's smaller days. Longboards generate their own speed, so they work in very small surf.
- Volume: 80–100L+
- Best for: Small wave days (under 1m), nose riding, cross-stepping
Recommendation: Malibu or classic single-fin longboard
Fun / Mid-Length (7'0"–8'6")
The sweet spot for many UAE surfers. Enough volume for easy paddling, short enough for proper turns.
- Volume: 50–70L
- Best for: Beginner to intermediate, 0.5–1.5m waves
Fish (5'4"–6'4")
Great for UAE's soft, mushy waves. The wider tail generates speed in slower surf.
- Volume: 35–45L
- Best for: Intermediate surfers on smaller days
Shortboard (5'8"–6'4")
Requires the most skill to surf but offers the most performance in powerful waves. Less useful on typical UAE days.
- Best for: Experienced surfers on bigger days (1.0m+)
Where to Buy in the UAE
- Surf House Dubai — largest selection in the UAE, new and second-hand boards
- Surf Shack Fujairah — locally-owned, good second-hand market
- Online: Local classifieds and Facebook groups for used boards
Board Care in the UAE Climate
- UV damage — the UAE sun will yellow and delaminate foam boards quickly. Store out of direct sunlight.
- Heat — never leave your board in a hot car. Dings will expand rapidly in heat.
- Wax: Use warm-water wax (Sticky Bumps Warm or Tropical) — UAE water temperatures range from 22–32°C.
