SUP Gear Guide — Stand-Up Paddleboarding Equipment

Your complete guide to stand-up paddleboarding equipment — how to choose a paddleboard, paddle, and accessories for the UAE's flat water and coastal conditions.

SUP Equipment Overview

Stand-up paddleboarding requires very little equipment compared to most water sports: a board, a paddle, and a leash. Optional accessories add comfort and safety. A quality rental costs AED 80–150 per hour at most UAE beach locations, making SUP the most affordable way to get on the water.

Complete beginner setup cost (new): AED 1,800–5,000 Complete beginner setup cost (second-hand): AED 800–2,000

Choosing a Paddleboard

Board Types

All-round boards are the most versatile and best for beginners. They're wide (30–32 inches), stable, and manageable in light chop. These are what you'll find in most UAE rental shops.

Touring boards are longer and narrower, designed for covering distance efficiently. Ideal for paddling along the Fujairah coast or exploring Abu Dhabi's mangroves. Less stable for beginners.

Racing boards are long, narrow, and extremely fast. Used in the UAE SUP racing circuit. Not recommended for recreational paddlers.

SUP yoga boards are very wide and stable, designed for yoga poses. Several Abu Dhabi and Dubai studios offer SUP yoga on these boards.

Inflatable vs Hard Boards

| | Inflatable (iSUP) | Hard (Epoxy/Fibreglass) | |---|---|---| | Storage | Rolls into a backpack | Requires roof rack/van | | Durability | Highly durable | Can ding/crack | | Performance | Slight flex under load | Stiffer, faster | | Price (entry) | AED 800–2,500 | AED 1,500–5,000 | | Best for | UAE residents with limited storage | Performance-focused riders |

UAE recommendation: Inflatable boards make the most sense for most UAE residents living in apartments. They perform nearly as well as hard boards for recreational paddling and are easy to transport in a car.

Size Guide

| Rider Weight | Board Volume | Board Length | |---|---|---| | Under 70kg | 150–200L | 9'6"–10'6" | | 70–90kg | 200–260L | 10'–11' | | 90kg+ | 250–320L | 10'6"–12' |

For SUP yoga or maximum stability, add 20–30L to the above recommendations.

Top Brands in the UAE

  • Red Paddle Co — premium inflatables, excellent quality, widely available
  • Starboard — strong all-round range, good UAE distribution
  • JP Australia — quality touring and all-round boards
  • Aztron — affordable entry-level inflatables available at Adventure HQ

Paddles

Fixed vs Adjustable

  • Adjustable paddles are ideal for beginners and shared use. Easy to set the correct length (chin to wrist with arm raised).
  • Fixed/cut-to-size paddles are lighter and stiffer for regular paddlers.

Blade Material

  • Plastic blades — durable, inexpensive, heavy. Fine for casual paddling.
  • Fibreglass blades — lighter, more efficient, mid-price range.
  • Carbon blades — lightest, stiffest, most efficient. Used by racers and serious tourers.

Paddle Length Formula

Stand the paddle vertically next to you. The handle should reach between your chin and the top of your head — adjust up or down based on stroke preference.

Cost: AED 150–800 (plastic to carbon)

Essential Accessories

Leash (Essential)

Attaches your ankle to the board, ensuring you don't lose it if you fall. Use a coiled ankle leash for flat water (doesn't drag in the water) and a straight leash for surf or moving water.

Cost: AED 80–150

Personal Flotation Device (PFD)

UAE law requires a PFD to be on your vessel when paddling in open water. A compact, inflatable belt pack PFD is the most practical option — it doesn't restrict movement and inflates instantly if needed.

Cost: AED 200–500

Rash Guard / Sun Protection

The UAE sun is extremely strong year-round. A long-sleeve UV-50+ rash guard is essential. Zinc sunscreen on exposed skin (face, hands, feet) is also strongly recommended.

Cost: AED 100–250 for a quality rash guard

Waterproof Bag / Phone Case

For touring and exploration, a waterproof bag attached to the board's bungee allows you to carry water, snacks, and your phone safely.

Cost: AED 30–150

Renting vs Buying in the UAE

Rent First

If you've never tried SUP, rent before buying. Most beach parks in Dubai and Abu Dhabi offer hourly rentals at AED 80–150 per hour. Kite Beach, JBR Beach, and Al Bateen Beach in Abu Dhabi all have rental operators.

When to Buy

If you're paddling more than 2–3 times per month, buying makes financial sense within 3–4 months. An entry-level inflatable SUP package (board, paddle, pump, bag) can be purchased for AED 1,200–2,000 — comparable to 15–25 rental sessions.

Where to Buy in UAE

  • Adventure HQ (Dubai, Times Square Centre) — stocks Red Paddle Co, Aztron, and accessories
  • Sun & Sand Sports (multiple Dubai locations) — limited SUP range, useful for accessories
  • Specialist importers — ask your local school or rental operator for recommendations on specific brands
