Sailing Gear Guide for UAE Waters

Sailing gear in the UAE spans two worlds: the sheltered Gulf where light wind conditions and warm temperatures mean minimal kit, and the more demanding offshore passages to Musandam where proper safety gear is essential.

Safety Equipment (Non-Negotiable)

Life Jacket / Personal Flotation Device (PFD)

A correctly fitted, serviced life jacket is the single most important piece of sailing kit. UAE club racing typically requires a minimum 100N buoyancy.

Types:

| Type | Use case | Price | |------|----------|-------| | Foam buoyancy aid (50N) | Dinghy sailing, flat water | AED 100–300 | | Manual inflate (150N) | Day sailing, club racing | AED 300–700 | | Auto-inflate (150N–275N) | Offshore passages, night sailing | AED 600–1,500 |

For offshore UAE sailing — especially night passages to Musandam — an auto-inflate 150N+ jacket with crotch strap and harness attachment points is required by most UAE clubs.

Annual service: Auto-inflate jackets require annual servicing (rearming kit + bladder check). Most UAE chandleries offer this service.

Harness and Safety Line (Tether)

For offshore or night sailing, a sailing harness worn with a 2-point tether clips you to jacklines running along the deck. This prevents crew going overboard in rough conditions.

Integrated harness/life jackets are the most practical option — one piece of kit performs both functions.

Price: AED 400–900 (integrated harness/life jacket)

Clothing for UAE Sailing

Light Wind Season (Oct–Apr)

The UAE's sailing season brings warm days (25–35°C) and cool evenings. Layering is key:

  • Base layer: Technical UV-protection long-sleeve (AED 100–300) — essential for long days on the water
  • Mid layer: Light fleece or softshell for evening passages (AED 200–500)
  • Sun protection: Wide-brim hat, polarised sunglasses, sunscreen SPF 50+

Foul-Weather Gear

Even in the Gulf's relatively benign conditions, overnight passages and strong Shamal conditions (35kt+) require waterproof sailing jackets and trousers.

Entry-level: Henri Lloyd Delta 2.5-layer jacket — reliable for Gulf conditions (AED 600–1,200) Mid-range: Musto MPX Gore-Tex — the industry standard for offshore (AED 2,000–3,500)

Bib-and-brace trousers provide better waterproofing than shorts-style trousers for offshore use.

Sailing Gloves

Gloves protect hands from rope burns when handling sheets and halyards. Key features for UAE conditions:

  • Cut-off finger tips for grip and feel
  • Grip palm padding
  • Quick-dry material — essential in UAE humidity

Recommended: Gill Pro Gloves or Zhik XT1 (AED 80–200)

Deck Shoes

Non-marking, grip-soled shoes for wet deck surfaces. Sperry Topsiders are a UAE sailing classic; Gill and Musto make more technical sailing-specific options.

Price: AED 150–500

Navigation and Instruments

Chart Plotter / GPS

For UAE coastal and offshore sailing:

  • Garmin GPSMAP 79s — handheld, good for crew use (AED 600–900)
  • Navionics app on iPad or phone — excellent UAE Gulf charts, affordable (subscription ~AED 200/year)
  • Chartplotter (fixed) — fitted to most UAE club keelboats; personal chartplotters needed for one-design dinghy races

VHF Radio

A handheld marine VHF radio is essential for offshore passages — UAE marinas, coast guard, and vessel traffic services monitor Channel 16 continuously.

Holding an RYA Short Range Certificate (SRC) is required to legally operate marine VHF in the UAE. Most UAE sailing clubs run SRC courses annually (AED 300–500).

Recommended VHF: Standard Horizon HX210 or ICOM IC-M25 (AED 300–600)

Navigation Tools

  • Parallel rules + dividers for chart work (AED 80–200)
  • Handheld compass (AED 100–300)
  • Tide tables for UAE/Oman waters (free from UAE National Centre of Meteorology)
  • UAE Pilot charts (Admiralty or UKHO charts covering Gulf and Gulf of Oman)

Dinghy Sailing Specifics

Trapeze Harness

For high-performance dinghies (420, 470, RS200) — allows crew to hike out over the side for balance. Most UAE club boats have trapeze wires.

Price: AED 200–500

Wetsuit

UAE dinghy sailors occasionally capsize — having a 1–2mm short wetsuit is useful in the cooler months (Dec–Feb when water reaches 22°C on the East Coast).
