Jet Skiing Gear Guide for the UAE

Most UAE jet ski riders use rental equipment — so your personal gear requirements are minimal. But knowing what to bring, what to wear, and what to look for if you decide to buy your own personal watercraft (PWC) will make every session better.

What Rental Operators Provide

All UAE jet ski rental operators are legally required to provide:

  • Life jacket (PFD) — ISO-certified buoyancy aid, fitted to your weight
  • Kill switch lanyard — attaches to your wrist; kills the engine if you fall off
  • Safety briefing — covering speed limits, restricted zones, and basic manoeuvres

Some operators also provide:

  • Rash guard (on request)
  • Waterproof storage bag for valuables

Essential Personal Gear

Life Jacket / PFD

Wearing a life jacket is mandatory in the UAE for all jet ski riders, and operators will not allow you on the water without one. If you ride regularly, buying your own is worthwhile — a personal fit is more comfortable and less restrictive than a rental jacket.

Types for jet skiing:

  • USCG Type III / ISO 50N buoyancy aid — most comfortable for active riding; adequate for calm UAE Gulf waters
  • Impact vest (50N) — designed for board sports; absorbs fall impact; common among UAE jet ski enthusiasts
  • Inflatable jacket (150N) — overkill for rental sessions but appropriate if you're taking your own ski offshore

Wetsuit / Rash Guard

UAE water temperatures range from 22°C (February) to 32°C (August). For most sessions, a rash guard is sufficient. A wetsuit provides impact protection and warmth for early morning winter sessions.

Waterproof Phone Case

A floating waterproof phone case is essential — not for while you're riding, but for before and after, and in case you capsize. Phone pouches that float are available for AED 50–150 from Decathlon and Amazon UAE.

Never put your phone on the jet ski dash without securing it — vibration will shake it into the water within minutes.

Sun Protection

UAE sun exposure on open water is intense:

  • Sunscreen SPF 50+ water-resistant — reapply every 90 minutes
  • UV rash guard / long sleeves — most effective sun protection for arms and torso
  • Polarised sunglasses with strap — essential; normal sunglasses blow off at speed
  • Wide-brim cap — for before/after the session

Buying Your Own Jet Ski

Owning a personal watercraft in the UAE is a significant investment but gives unlimited access to the water.

Sit-Down Recreational (most popular):

  • 3-person standup design for cruising and casual use

All personal watercraft operating in UAE waters must be registered with the relevant emirate authority (Dubai Maritime Authority, Abu Dhabi National Marine Dredging, etc.). Annual registration fees apply.

  • Land storage (trailer): AED 150–400/month at dedicated facilities

Maintenance and Registration in the UAE

Annual checks required:

  • Registration renewal with physical inspection
  • Life jacket inspection (replacement if damaged)
  • Fire extinguisher check (required on some vessels)

Common maintenance:

  • Flush the engine with fresh water after every salt-water session (critical for longevity)
  • Anti-corrosion spray on electrical connections (UAE humidity is harsh)
