Freediving Equipment Guide for UAE Waters

Freediving equipment is significantly lighter and simpler than scuba gear β€” but choosing the right kit for UAE conditions makes a big difference to your dive performance and safety.

The Essential Kit

Mask

A low-volume mask is the single most important piece of freediving equipment. Low internal volume means less air needed for equalisation as you descend β€” critical for deep dives.

What to look for:

  • Soft silicone skirt for a wide range of face shapes
  • Tempered glass lenses (not plastic)
  • Volume under 100ml for deeper freediving

Recommended options for the UAE:

  • Cressi Nano β€” popular entry-level low-volume mask, widely available in UAE dive shops
  • Omer Alien β€” excellent for faces with higher nose bridges common in the region
  • Salvimar Noah β€” budget-friendly option for beginners

Price range: AED 200–600

Fins

Freediving fins are longer than scuba fins β€” typically 70–90cm blade length β€” for efficient, glide-focused propulsion using the dolphin kick or flutter kick.

Blade materials:

| Material | Price | Performance | Best for | |----------|-------|-------------|----------| | Plastic/Fiberglass | AED 400–800 | Good | Beginners, AIDA Level 1–2 | | Fibreglass | AED 800–1,500 | Very good | Intermediate (20–30m) | | Carbon fibre | AED 1,200–3,500 | Excellent | Advanced / competition |

For UAE conditions β€” shallow reef dives at 5–20m and Musandam wall dives to 30m+ β€” a mid-range fiberglass fin is ideal. Carbon fins are worth the investment once you're diving deeper regularly.

Foot pocket fit: Try fins with your wetsuit socks on β€” a tight pocket reduces energy leakage.

Wetsuit

UAE water temperatures range from 22Β°C (February, East Coast) to 32Β°C (August, Gulf). For the freediving season (October–May):

  • East Coast, Oct–Dec: 3mm full wetsuit
  • East Coast, Jan–Mar: 5mm two-piece (long john + jacket) for comfort at depth
  • Apr–May: 1.5–3mm shorty or rash guard

Freediving-specific wetsuits are made from open-cell neoprene (smooth inner lining) which is warmer and more flexible than scuba wetsuits of the same thickness. They require lubrication (diluted conditioner or baby shampoo) to put on.

Price range: AED 400–1,500 for a quality two-piece open-cell suit

Safety Lanyard

A dive lanyard connects your wrist or ankle to the dive line during deep dives and prevents sinking in case of blackout. Essential for any dive beyond 10m.

Ensure your lanyard has a quick-release mechanism and is not longer than 2m. Most AIDA courses will specify the type required.

Price: AED 100–250

Weight Belt

Buoyancy compensation: freediving wetsuits are highly buoyant at the surface but negative at depth. A rubber weight belt (not nylon, which slips) with lead weights allows you to fine-tune your neutral buoyancy point.

UAE guideline: Most divers in UAE waters need 1–3kg in a 3mm wetsuit, 2–4kg in a 5mm wetsuit. Start light and add weight in small increments.

Price: AED 150–400 (belt + weights)

Optional but Recommended

Dive Computer

A freediving computer tracks depth, dive time, surface intervals, and alerts you when surface intervals are too short β€” a key safety feature.

Entry-level:

  • Cressi Neon β€” simple, reliable, popular in UAE AIDA courses (AED 800–1,000)

Mid-range:

  • Garmin Descent Mk3i or Suunto D5 β€” full diving and surface GPS, suitable for freediving and scuba (AED 2,500–3,500)

Competition:

  • Omer Freediving Computer β€” dedicated freediving functions, split-time tracking (AED 1,500–2,500)

Nose Clip

Used for static apnea (breath-hold at the surface) and by divers who struggle with the mouthpiece frenzel technique. Very inexpensive (AED 20–80) and often included in course kits.

Buoy and Line

For open-water freediving without a boat, a surface buoy (diver-down flag + line) is required for safety. A 30–40m reel with a weight at the bottom provides a reference line for descent and ascent.

Price: AED 200–500 complete setup

Where to Buy in the UAE

UAE-based dive shops carry freediving equipment year-round:

  • Pavilion Dive Centre (Dubai/Fujairah) β€” full freediving range
  • Orca Diving (Dubai) β€” freediving instruction and retail
  • Freestyle Divers (Fujairah) β€” specialist freediving stockist

Online orders from European retailers (OMER, Salvimar, Cressi) ship to UAE in 3–7 days via DHL.
