Best Surfing Spots in the UAE — Where to Catch Waves
Surfing in the UAE doesn't get the global spotlight it deserves. While the Gulf side is too sheltered for swells, the East Coast along the Indian Ocean picks up consistent groundswell from November through April. The waves aren't massive — typically 0.5–2 m — but they're real, rideable, and largely uncrowded. Here's where to find them.
How UAE Waves Are Generated
The UAE's surfable waves come from Indian Ocean groundswells generated by storms in the Arabian Sea and, in winter, the Bay of Bengal. These swells wrap around the tip of Oman and hit the Fujairah coastline at an oblique angle, producing beach and reef break waves. The best conditions arrive overnight and peak in the early morning before onshore winds fill in.
The Gulf side (Dubai, Abu Dhabi) receives virtually no surf due to the shallow, enclosed sea. For surfing, you must head to the East Coast.
Best Surf Spots on the UAE East Coast
Khor Fakkan — The Most Consistent
Khor Fakkan is the UAE's most reliable surf location. The bay catches south and southeast swells well, and the main beach has a beach break that works at various stages of tide. Expect knee-to-waist high on regular days, occasionally reaching overhead during a solid SW swell in January or February.
- Best swell direction: S–SE
- Best wind: Offshore (NW–W), usually early morning
- Tide: Works best on mid to high tide
- Crowd level: Low — often just a handful of locals and expat regulars
Snoopy Island, Dibba
The stretch of beach south of Snoopy Island picks up more exposed NE swell than Khor Fakkan. The reef around the headland can produce a short right-hander on bigger days. More exposed to wind chop, so swell forecasting here matters more.
- Best swell direction: NE–E
- Character: Short, punchy peaks; fast sections on the reef
- Note: Snorkel trip boats launch from here — paddle out early to avoid traffic
Fujairah City Beach
The beach near Fujairah corniche catches most swell directions. It's a soft sandy bottom beach break — ideal for beginners. No local board rental on the beach itself, but schools nearby have equipment. See the schools directory for operators on the Fujairah coast.
Al Aqah
A longer stretch of open beach north of Fujairah that picks up all East Coast swells. The beach gets crowded on weekends with families, but dawn sessions before 7 am are quiet. The absence of reef makes it very forgiving — good for learning.
Sandy Beach / Miramar
The Miramar Hotel stretch is a popular weekend destination. Gentle beach break, consistent but rarely large. Best for beginners and longboarders.
UAE Surf Season
| Month | Swell Frequency | Wave Height | Wind | Water Temp | |-------|----------------|-------------|------|------------| | Oct–Nov | Occasional | 0.3–0.8 m | Light | 28–30°C | | Dec–Jan | Frequent | 0.5–1.5 m | N/NW offshore | 24–26°C | | Feb–Mar | Frequent | 0.5–1.8 m | Variable | 23–25°C | | Apr–May | Occasional | 0.3–0.8 m | Onshore | 26–28°C | | Jun–Sep | Rare | Flat–0.3 m | SE onshore | 31–34°C |
Peak season is December through March. The best days come 24–48 hours after a strong low pressure system tracks through the Arabian Sea.
Surf Forecasting for the UAE
The UAE's small swells require accurate forecasting tools:
- Windy.com: Set to ECMWF model, check swell period as well as height. Anything above 10-second period can produce decent waves.
- Surfline: Has a Khor Fakkan forecast point — useful for general trend
- Magicseaweed (MSW): East Coast Oman entries give a good proxy for UAE East Coast
Aim for swells with 1 m+ height and 10–14 second period. Short-period wind swell (under 8 seconds) rarely produces clean waves here.
What to Bring
- Board: A mid-length or mini mal works best for the UAE's gentle waves. 7'0"–8'6" is ideal. Shortboards struggle on smaller days.
- Wetsuit: 1–2mm rashguard in summer; 3mm shorty or full suit Oct–Mar when water drops to 22–24°C.
- Leash: Always. Reef entries at Dibba mean a snapped leash sends your board toward sharp coral.
- Wax: Warm water basecoat + tropical topcoat.
Beginner Lessons
Several surf schools operate on the Fujairah coast offering lessons from AED 200–350 for a 90-minute group session including board and instruction. Most schools provide soft-top learner boards, which are ideal on the UAE's typically gentle beach breaks.
